CARNIVAL 2006

Rio's Carnival is what Brazil is famous for... and for good reason. Without question, Carnival in Brazil is like no other show in the world. Scores of Brazilians take to the streets to celebrate, dance, sing and enjoy this enormous festival. The biggest, most energetic, highly charged party takes place from February 5th - 8th.

Carnival begins with blocos ("blocks" or community groups) who travel to the neighborhoods of Rio playing live music, singing and dancing. Meanwhile, Samba Schools are readying for what they have rehearsed for all year long... the Samba School Parade. Known as the "greatest show on earth" the parades are what most are familiar with; lavishly carried out with grandiose costumes and adornments, floats, bands, lively entertainment and exuberance.

The historic city of Salvador, in the northeastern state of Bahia is home to the biggest street festival in Brazil. In Bahia, natives crowd the streets to rejoices, sing, parade and take part in an week longall-day, all-night marathon of partying, camaraderie and fun.

Just a few miles from Recife is Olinda, another historic city that takes part in Carnival. This 17th century baroque jewel participates in the 2nd biggest Carnival celebration in the country, showcasing the northeast culture and flair.
